Canola
Overview
Canola functions as a major broadleaf break crop across southern and western regions, and its adoption is expanding in suitable northern zones. It enhances rotation diversity, suppresses grass weeds and disrupts disease cycles in continuous cereal systems. Early establishment on stored soil moisture is critical, as well as adequate phosphorus and sulphur inputs. Hybrid selection, optimal plant density and pest control underpin yield stability. Harvest can be managed through windrowing or direct heading, which is dependent on environmental risk factors such as frost incidence and pod shattering, with canola typically leaving a clean and well-structured paddock for following cereals.
